I have had two Selective Mutes as students. Each stayed with me for close to three years (not at the same time).
Both learned to speak. I have a day group and also see students one-on-one after school. My one-on-one practice is currently full. I see kids until past nine at night. The day group has seven lovely, extremely sweet kids, each with their own issue.
We do have a speech therapist in three days a week for two who have brain damage that impeded speaking. It's an extraordinarily nice atmosphere.
There is currently one student who speaks very little, but is not quite as severe as the Selective Mutes who were here in earlier years. Because this is such a loving and low pressure atmosphere, it is an ideal place to get over being a Selective Mute.
